Admissions Process

Securing a place for your child at Budleigh House involves collaboration between parents, schools, and your local authority. To assist you through this journey, we’ve outlined a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the process.

Whether your child can attend Budleigh House depends on several factors:

  • Whether you and your child feel that this is the right environment.

  • Whether your local authority agrees that a specialist Alternative Provision is the best fit and agrees to fund a place.

  • Whether the Alternative Provsion has the necessary space and resources to meet your child’s individual needs.

  • Geographical location: We prioritise children from Doncaster,  Goole, Selby, Hull, East Riding and Scunthorpe.

Step 1: Contact Your child’s school and the Local Authority’s Special Educational Needs (SEN) Team.

You can find the contact details for your local authority’s SEND team on your council’s website. The SEND team will assess your child and issue an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), which will outline whether they believe a special provsion is suitable. Most students join Budleigh House at the secondary transfer stage (Year 7) with an EHCP in place, but we do consider requests for older students if space is available.

Step 2: Arrange a Visit to Budleigh House

If the local authority believes that your child would benefit from a special provision, you should arrange an informal visit to Budleigh House by calling 07484 371525. This initial visit is for you to tour the Budleigh House and ask any questions; there is no need to bring your child at this stage.

Step 3: Notify the Local Authority of Your Preferred AP

If the local authority agrees that your child should attend a special provision, let the SEND team know that you are interested in Budleigh House. For those outside our catchment area, the local authority may suggest a more local provision. If Budleigh House is deemed a suitable option, the local authority will send a referral letter and relevant reports for our consideration.

Step 4: Alternative Provision Referral Assessment

Once we receive a referral, we carefully assess each one in relation to the child’s age, educational needs, and required resources. Priority is given to children who are currently, or have previously been, Looked After.

Step 5: Visit with Your Child

If it appears on paper that we can meet your child’s needs, you and your child will be invited to visit the Budleigh House. This visit allows us to better understand your child’s needs and determine whether we can fully support them. The provision consists of 18 hours per week, spread across three days, with 6 hours allocated each day.

Step 6: Richmond House’s Response to the Local Authority

If we are able to provide the appropriate resources and have available space, we will notify the local authority that Budleigh House – Alternative Provision can accommodate your child’s needs.

Step 7: Confirmation from Your Local Authority

Your local authority will formally inform you of whether a place has been offered at Budleigh House.

Step 8: Richmond House – Alternative Provision Welcome Letter

Once the local authority has confirmed your child’s placement, we will send a letter outlining start dates and other necessary arrangements.

We look forward to supporting you and your child through this process.
